History

SrIperumbUthUr/SrI mahAbhuthapuri – SrI (kainkarya SrI), perum (mahA – big), bhUtha (bhUtha gaNas of shiva), Ur (puri – town). This is where the bhUtha gaNas (ghostly servants) of shiva worshipped Adhi kEsavan emperumAn @ ananthasaras (pushkariNi) to get rid of the curse that was given by shiva.SrIperumbUthUr is the town where SrI rAmAnuja (also known as emperumAnAr, udaiyavar, SrI bhAshyakArar, yathirAjar, etc) appeared close to 1000 years ago (1017 CE). The temple here is known as SrI Adhi kEsava perumAL – SrI bhAshyakArar dhEvasthAnam. There are regular activities in this temple which includes many uthsavams as well.

Adhi kEsava perumAL with ubhaya nAchiyArs

SrI kESava sOmayAji and  kAnthimathi ammAL were living in SrIperumbUthUr. They did not have any offspring. SrI kEsava sOmayAji then visits thiruvallikkENi dhivya dhEsam and performs a puthra kAmEshti yAgam (praying for a son) and worships SrI vEnkata krishNan emperumAn. emperumAn promises to him that he himself will appear as his son. Soon after, kAnthimathi ammAL gives birth to a beautiful boy child at SrIperumbUthUr and he gets named as iLaiyAzhwAr by his maternal uncle periya thirumalai nambi. The whole history of emperumAnAr can be viewed at http://guruparamparai.wordpress.com/2012/09/06/emperumanar/.

emperumAnAr – avathAra sthalam (maNdapam where emperumAnAr took birth)

The uthsavar archA vigraham of emperumAnAr that is present here is known as thAmugantha (cherished by himself) thirumEni (vigraham/form). When emperumAnAr was 120 years old, kanthAdai ANdAn (son of mudhaliyANdAn) gets an archA vigraham which exactly resembles emperumAnAr at that ripe age and presents the same to emperumAnAr. emperumAnAr embraces that vigraham and blesses that vigraham to his sishyas. He orders that vigraham to be installed at SrIperumbUthUr – his avathAra sthalam and kanthAdai ANdAn promptly follows his orders. The mUlavar and uthsavar of emperumAnAr’s share the same thridhaNdam (3 sticks carried by sannyAsis). When uthsavar is in the garbhagraham (main sanctum), the thridhaNdam is with the mUlavar and when the uthsavar goes out, the thridhaNdam is with the uthsavar.

At present, two jIyar swAmys currently reside in this dhivya dhEsam – SrImath paramahamsa ithyAdhi gOvindha yathirAja jIyar swamy (yathirAja jIyar mutt) and SrImath paramahamsa ithyAdhi appan parakAla embAr jIyar swamy (SrIperumbUthUr embAr jIyar mutt) . Also, many AchArya purusha families live in this dhivya dhEsam and serve the emperumAns and emperumAnAr here.
